63 Governors at Grant Thornton for PaJeS Training Evening

Last week PaJeS held its fourth evening of training workshops for governors of Jewish schools, hosted at the offices of Grant Thornton in Euston. 63 governors from 25 different schools attended and there was a lively buzz of conversation and excitement throughout the evening.

The workshops included a session by Clare Collins from the National Governors Association (NGA) on how governors should prepare for Ofsted. Needless to say, in the current climate of unannounced inspections, this was a very popular session and covered a topic that is at the forefront of governors’ concerns.  A governor from Beit Shvidler Primary School said that the workshop “laid out really clearly what to expect from an Ofsted inspection and highlighted the aspects of governance that needs checking in order to comply.”

Richard Tyndall from the NGA also gave a session on ‘Knowing Your School – The Data and Beyond’ helping governors to understand the different sources of data, and in particular how to evaluate the school’s data dashboard. The third workshop was led by PaJeS Executive Director Rabbi David Meyer. Participants praised the “interesting views and advice on how to marry head teacher and governing body priorities, plus the regular barriers to achieving consensus”.

It was evident how much governors enjoyed meeting their counterparts from other schools and sharing their experiences and challenges. One participant described the event as “a very well organised and welcoming evening. Very useful also for networking and feeling part of a larger governor body community”, whilst another found it “very helpful to have a cross-Jewish forum”.  Many suggestions were put forward for future topics.

The next PaJeS event for governors will take place on 2nd July 2015 when Richard Gold will brief governors on recent changes on admissions policies.
